While Amazon tablets run on a version of Android, not all Android apps are available from the Amazon app store. This tutorial will take you through the process of downloading and installing Google Android Package Kit (APK) so that you can download apps directly from the Google Play Store.

Step 1. Allow installation of applications from unknown sources

Open the “Settings” app on your Amazon tablet. Locate and open “Security and Privacy.” then turn on the toggle that appears to the right of “Apps from Unknown Sources” in the Privacy section. If a dialog box appears select “OK.”

Step 2. Download APK

Launch the web browser on your tablet. Navigate to the first link in the list below, select “Download APK” on the page, and then select “OK” in the window that pops up at the bottom of the screen asking if you want to download this file.  After downloading the first file complete step 3 and repeat for each file. The files MUST be downloaded in the order provided below.

The APK files are:

  1. Google Account Manager APK: https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-account-manager/google-account-manager-5-1-1743759-release/google-account-manager-5-1-1743759-android-apk-download/
  2. Google Services Framework APK: https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-services-framework/google-services-framework-5-1-1743759-release/google-services-framework-5-1-1743759-android-apk-download/
  3. Google Play Services APK: https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-play-services/google-play-services-11-5-09-release/google-play-services-11-5-09-230-164803921-android-apk-download/

Step 3. Install APK

After downloading the install screen will appear. If the install screen does not appear open the “Docs” app, then open the “Local Storage” tab and find the downloaded file. Select “Next” on each successive screen then select “Install”. A progress bar will be displayed briefly before a message stating that the app was successfully installed. Select “Done” then proceed to Step 2 for the next file.

Step 4. Success!

The Play Store app will now be available from the home screen. Open the app and log in to download directly from the Google Play Store.
